If you only take one tool into Walmart for clearance hunting, make it the Walmart app. Its barcode scanner shows the price for the store you’re in, and on clearance items that price is often lower than the tag.
Step 1: Pick your store
Prices vary by location. Before you scan anything, set the app to the Walmart you’re standing in. If it’s set to a different store, the price you see may not match what you’ll pay.
Step 2: Open the scanner
In the app, tap the small scanner icon in the search bar. Allow camera access if your phone asks.
Step 3: Scan the product barcode
Point the camera at the barcode on the package. The app will show the item and its in-store price.
Step 4: Compare with the tag
If the app price is lower than the shelf tag, you’ve found hidden clearance. Screenshot the app price if you want to show it at checkout, but remember the register price is what you’ll pay.
Where scanning pays off most
- Yellow clearance tags. Clearance prices keep dropping, and tags lag behind.
- Seasonal sections after a holiday.
- Items sitting in odd places, like a single toy in housewares.
- Anything with an old-looking tag. The date under the barcode on a Walmart tag shows when that price was set.
Reading the shelf tag while you’re there
A few quick tag facts help you decide what to scan:
- Regular prices at Walmart usually end in .97.
- A red rollback tag is a temporary discount, usually lasting a couple of weeks.
- A yellow clearance tag is a permanent markdown that keeps dropping until the item sells out.
More detail in our clearance vs rollback guide.
Common mistakes
- Wrong store selected. The most common reason the app and register disagree.
- Scanning the shelf tag instead of the product. Scan the package.
- Assuming every store matches. Hidden clearance at one Walmart may not exist at the next.
When the register shows a different price
Systems don’t always update at the same moment. If the register rings higher than the app, you can politely ask for a price check, but don’t argue. Some days it won’t go your way.
Make it a habit
You don’t need to scan everything in the store. Scan clearance, seasonal and anything that looks out of place. A few minutes with your phone can turn a regular trip into a real deal hunt. Start with our hidden clearance guide if you’re new.
