Walmart Clearance vs Rollback: Which Deal Is Better?

Walk through any Walmart and you’ll see red tags and yellow tags everywhere. They both mean a lower price, but they work in completely different ways. Knowing the difference helps you decide whether to buy now or wait.

Rollback: a temporary price drop

A rollback is a temporary discount, usually shown on a red tag. It typically lasts no more than a couple of weeks. After that, the price goes back to normal. The item is still part of Walmart’s regular lineup, so it gets restocked.

Buy a rollback item when it’s something you’d buy anyway and the price is good. Don’t expect it to drop further.

Clearance: a permanent markdown

Clearance, shown on a yellow tag, is a permanent markdown. The price keeps dropping over time until the item sells out, and it isn’t restocked afterward. These are products Walmart is moving out.

Buy a clearance item when you’re happy with the current price, or when stock is low. Waiting can get you a lower price, but someone else may grab the last one first.

Other things the tag tells you

  • Prices ending in .97 are usually Walmart’s regular prices.
  • The date under the barcode shows when that price was set. It applies to both rollbacks and clearance.
  • Several numbers on one tag can include the unit price, the old price and the current price. The current price is the one you pay.

Can you stack discounts?

Independent discounts can’t be applied to clearance items, but they can apply to rollbacks.

Where hidden clearance fits in

Clearance items keep dropping in price, but the paper tag doesn’t always keep up. That’s where hidden clearance comes from. An item with a yellow tag showing 50% off might already be 75% off in the system. Scan it in the Walmart app to see the real price.

The simple rule

Rollback: good price now, gone later. Clearance: price falls over time, stock runs out. Scan clearance items every time, because that’s where the hidden savings live. More on that in our hidden clearance guide.
