Does Walmart Have Penny Items? The Honest Answer

Search for Walmart penny items and you’ll find plenty of videos and articles promising one-cent finds. The honest answer is more boring, but it’ll save you time: Walmart doesn’t work like Dollar General, and chasing pennies there usually isn’t the best plan.

No weekly penny list

At Dollar General, penny items follow a weekly pattern. Prices change on Tuesdays, and shopper communities share lists of what’s going to a penny. Walmart has nothing like that. There’s no public schedule, no reliable weekly list and no store-wide penny day.

What Walmart does have

Walmart clearance is a tiered system. Prices drop step by step until an item sells. Shoppers who scan clearance with the Walmart app regularly find items far below their tag price. That’s called hidden clearance, and it’s real and repeatable.

Occasionally, shoppers report items scanning at extremely low prices. Those finds exist, but they’re rare and unpredictable. You can’t plan a trip around them.

Why some items won’t sell at all

Sometimes an item scans and the register refuses it. Shoppers report seeing messages like “sale not allowed,” often on items with a problem such as a recall. Those are blocked in the system, and staff can’t sell them to you.

Watch out for misleading lists

Some websites publish “Walmart penny lists” that are really just general clearance roundups, or lists copied from other stores. A one-cent price at Dollar General says nothing about Walmart. Each store runs its own system.
